COLD STORAGE WITH MAGNETO OPTICAL DISKS
Windows 95 laptop + PCMCIA SCSI + 5.25" MO
Project Orlan Technical
Practical reference for using an old IBM 358CD (Windows 95) laptop as an air-gapped staging machine. Copy modern family photos and videos onto it over FTP, then write them to magneto-optical (MO) discs for long-term bunker storage.
GOAL
- Durable, offline, physical backups of modern files (JPEG, MP4, etc.)
- No need to view or play files on the Windows 95 machine
- Transfer from a modern PC to Win95 via FTP, then copy to MO discs
- Store discs in a climate-controlled bunker
PARTS LIST
- Laptop: IBM 358CD (Windows 95), PCMCIA Type II slot
- SCSI card: Adaptec SlimSCSI 1450A (APA-1450A) PCMCIA Fast SCSI Adapter + HD50 cable
eBay wording: Adaptec SlimSCSI 1450A PCMCIA Fast SCSI Adapter PC Card + High-Densty HD50 Cable
- MO drive: Sony RMO-S561 9.1 GB external 5.25" magneto-optical disk drive with SCSI cable
eBay wording: SONY RMO-S561 9.1 GB MAGNETO-OPTICAL DISK DRIVE UNIT W/ SCSI CABLE
- Primary media: Sony EDM-9100C / EDM-9100CWW 9.1 GB R/W 5.25" MO discs (two purchased)
Listing wording: SONY EDM-9100CWW 9.1GB R/W Optical Disk EDM9100C 5.25 MO
- Cheap test media: sealed medical-grade / DICOM 5.25" 2.3 GB rewritable MO discs, about $20 each
Listing wording: Sealed Medical Grade 5.25" 2.3 GB Rewritable MO-DISK DICOM disks
Not used / not recommended for new writes on this drive: Philips 1.3 GB 5.25" rewritable MO discs. The RMO-S561 can usually read 1.3 GB media but writing is limited or read-only.
HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY
- SlimSCSI 1450A is Fast SCSI-2 and works with the RMO-S561 (the drive can fall back from Ultra SCSI).
- Use 5.25" / 130 mm MO cartridges only. Do not use 3.5" MO discs.
- Best write media: 2.3, 2.6, 4.1, 4.8, 5.2, 8.6, and 9.1 GB rewritable discs.
- Native full-capacity media: Sony EDM-9100B/C, EM1-9100, EM5-9100, EDM-8600 (and compatible brands).
SONY RMO-S561 REAR PANEL / SCSI
- Two SCSI connectors for daisy-chaining.
- If the MO drive is the only or last device: SlimSCSI HD50 cable on one connector, leave the other empty.
- Do not put an external terminator on the unused connector.
- Function switch F = 1 enables the internal terminator.
- Unique SCSI ID (not 7; SlimSCSI usually uses 7). Change ID with power off using + / -.
- Power the drive on before inserting the PCMCIA card.
- Keep the SCSI cable short (under about 6 meters; shorter is better).
SOFTWARE / DRIVERS (WINDOWS 95)
Adaptec SlimSCSI 1450A
Windows 95 has built-in support and may auto-detect the card. Updated Adaptec miniport / ASPI drivers are more reliable with removable MO media. The card often arrives without a driver disk. Download drivers on a modern PC and copy them to a 1.44 MB floppy.
Install on Win95:
- Power on the MO drive first, then insert the SlimSCSI card.
- Control Panel -> Add New Hardware
- Choose No when asked to search automatically
- Select SCSI controllers -> Have Disk -> A:\
- Select APA-1450 / SlimSCSI 1450 PCMCIA SCSI Host Adapter
Search for packages mentioning APA-1450A, SlimSCSI 1450, Windows 95 miniport, INF + MPD files. Historical sources: Internet Archive, VOGONS driver library, old Adaptec / EZ-SCSI dumps.
Sony RMO-S561
No special Sony driver is normally required. It should appear as a SCSI removable disk once the SlimSCSI host adapter is working. Check Device Manager under SCSI controllers and Disk drives. No yellow exclamation or red X.
Formatting
Use FAT32 (Windows 95 OSR2 or later). FAT16 is limited to 2 GB partitions. Do not rely on the normal Windows Format command for MO discs. Use Adaptec afdisk from the SlimSCSI driver diskette. Copy afdisk.exe to C:\Windows\Command.
FILE AND WORKFLOW NOTES
- JPEG, MP4, and other modern files can be copied as-is. No conversion needed if they will not be played on Win95.
- FTP either direction works: server on Win95 and push from a modern PC, or pull with a Win95 FTP client.
- Long filenames work; 8.3 names avoid friction.
- Transfers are slow. Batch large libraries overnight.
- One 9.1 GB disc holds many JPEGs but only a modest amount of modern video. Plan multiple discs.
Suggested flow:
- Format the MO disc (FAT32 / afdisk).
- FTP files to the Win95 hard drive.
- Copy files to the MO volume.
- Optionally verify the copy.
- Eject, label with date and contents, store in the cartridge case.
MEDIA LONGEVITY
- Sony-class 5.25" MO discs are typically rated for 50+ years of archival life under proper storage.
- High rewrite-cycle rating and strong resistance to magnetic fields and dust because of the protective cartridge.
- Store cool, dry, and stable: about 15-25 C and 20-50% RH, dark, in original cases.
- A climate-controlled bunker is a good match.
- Long-term risk is more often finding a working drive later than the disc itself failing.
ARRIVAL CHECKLIST
- Power on the RMO-S561 first.
- Set a unique SCSI ID and switch F = 1.
- Insert the SlimSCSI 1450A.
- Install or update the Adaptec Windows 95 miniport driver if needed.
- Confirm the card and drive in Device Manager.
- Test with a cheap 2.3 GB rewritable disc before writing to 9.1 GB media.
- Format, copy, verify, label, store.
